afrowqApr 21, 12:34 PMPerformance and specifications determine whether or not it's a "Pro", not the people who use them. I'm not a professional race car driver, but my car has over 400hp. Does that mean that my car is not the high-performance sports car that the automotive world widely claims it to be?

And besides, how do you know those people aren't using heavy-duty applications? Is a thirty-second observation at Starbucks enough to justify such a statement?

Yes, a 30 second observation of people surfing FB on their Macbook (pros) is sufficient for me to assume that they are not performing complex video rendering or multi-filter Photoshop layering.

Laptops are not Pro machines. A 13" laptop with shared memory and a glossy screen is not professional. Unless your profession is being a writer. The "pro" moniker is a marketing ploy.

I realize the 15" and 17" are more powerful, but you still can't edit 4K RED footage on one, for example. But a Mac Pro? There's nothing professional you can throw at it that it can't do.

Also, regarding the car metaphor: put your 400hp car up against a NASCAR or Formula 1 vehicle and see how well it does on the racetrack against other REAL professional cars.

The car is nice, I'm sure, but is not a vehicle doing professional high performance driving. The same is true of macbook pros. They're solid machines, but they are not professional performance machines.

rasmasyeanMar 31, 12:52 PMso now you're going to say the US lost WW1 and WW2? :p

Well regarding defeating the Nazi's and the Axis powers, one can credit the US to turning the tide. When the Nazis like practically conquered everyone in their path and are invading the UK, the Brits had to transfer a lot of technologies they made for the war to the US...where the US industrial might pretty much defined what we know today as "air dominance". Even though the Brits did make a lot of neat weapons (as traditional to their roots), the US was the one who turned those into massive amounts of airplanes, carriers, and sophisticated radars for killing Nazi and Japanese air planes and submarines.

So I mean, without the Brits, the US might not have been able to make all those toys so fast, but without the US, the Brits would have fell. But in retrospect, I feel that the Allies would have won anyway...just that it would have ended with many more atomic bombs dropped all over the place by the US.

DoFoT9Mar 6, 05:15 PMnot sure just off of that info. what system are you running it on? tell us what you did to get it going

ill try my best to explain haha.

its running off my imac i7 machine (in sig).

i ran fah6 and it went through everything, i signed up etc then went to download a new version from the server. it successfully did that but then it came out with the error that i displayed before.

so i closed it down and reopened. now i get this.

[23:14:11] Client-core communications error: ERROR 0x7f

but then it goes
[23:14:24] - Connecting to assignment server
[23:14:25] - Successful: assigned to (171.64.65.56).
[23:14:25] + News From Folding@Home: Welcome to Folding@Home
[23:14:25] Loaded queue successfully.
[23:14:47] + Connections closed: You may now disconnect

but then it starts the whole loop again (wanting to download new jobs etc).

is there a GUI version lol i hate the command line interface!

edit: ok dw i installed the system preferences pane and now its running fine :D (didnt realise there was one!). is there anyway to control the amount of cores/CPU usage? and also to view the images of it computing? check your stats? hehe

my network usage is sitting on 9.4MB/s now. how odd....

ExpeditionApr 13, 04:01 AMYes, I do!
For me, TextEdit and Preview crash on launch. I suspected Dropbox 1.1.13 but killing Dropbox didn't 'cure' the crashes.

I have solved the problem related to crashes of TextEdit and Preview on DP2. Like I had suspected it was indeed related to Dropbox, namely the use of an alias for the Downloads folder in /users/~/. The alias pointed to the Downloads folder, which sits inside my Dropbox folder. When I replaced the alias in /users/~/ with a new folder called "Downloads", TextEdit and Preview would run without issues. So, to me it looks like that whatever is saved to in /users/~/Library/Containers/com.apple.TextEdit / cannot handle aliases.

Doctor QJul 18, 01:58 AMI wouldn't rule out downloading a movie, even for limited use, but the price would have to make it worthwhile. It'll have to compete with Netflix, my local video rental store, cable TV, and going to the movie theater. A tough market but a good population of potential customers.

devinci99Mar 22, 04:15 PMI do think it's possible that Apple might re-invent the classic.

A price drop and some minor update (such as wifi, bluetooth capabilities, ios capable) might happen. I think updating the classic's internal's and functionality might be feasible. But I doubt they will touch the physical appearance of it.

But re-inventing the classic would defeat the purpose of calling it 'classic'.

The Ipod Touch is their outlet for innovations now. Though, I wonder when the touch, would simple be called the iPod (drop the touch from the name).

JoeG4Feb 20, 03:42 AMDo you go to UMD by any chance? Because that looks almost exactly like my dorm down to the tiny desk they give you.

After participating in "mac setup" threads for more years than I wish to admit, I think most dorms have that atrocious little table and that matching funny looking chair with the skinny back that looks really uncomfortable.
:D

Seriously though, it's like they are intentionally trying to cause that wrist problem (I forget the name XD) with those keyboard drawers!

danielwsmitheeNov 27, 03:06 PMYou people are incorrigible. I do hope people start reading the thread or doing some research before anyone else makes a fool of themselves.

I find you the one that is incorrigible. The 23" inch price is competitive where it is as your link so eloquently points out. The Apple displays are easily worth a 15-20% mark-up. The problem is since the last time the display prices were updated 20" wide-screen panel prices have dropped nearly in half. So a year ago when Apple released this $699 price point it was a good price because competitors were selling the same panels at $599. Now they are at $399 and some times as low a $299. Apple's display is worth extra just not 75% to 100% extra.

Bengt77Sep 1, 01:39 PMwouldn't swapping a conroe chip in be an option? just go to Fry's and buy the chip then.
No, the Conroe and Merom are not, as they call it, pin-compatible. The Yonah and Merom are, by the way. So yeah, it makes sense for Apple to go with the Merom, but that doesn't mean I like it one bit.

EDIT: Sorry, roland.g, you beat me to it.

MShockMay 2, 05:40 PMInteresting after the new GNOME 3.0 release, I'm convinced we will move farther way from the typical menu layout to a more minimalist, more web interactive interface. iOS is probably the closest to that, but I see windows looking more like FireFox 4 for Windows with the Firefox pop down menu and elimination of File, Edit, View etc. at the top. Mac OS 10.8 or 11 will probably follow suit, except have more webOS like functionality, and will converge several apps into 1

codymacJan 10, 10:37 PMI really don't car about close racing in F1 as I would just prefer teams the engineering to be unregulated (except for safety). My opinion I believe is in the minority.

Not at all. I yearn for the days of Can-Am and Group B racing - racing was dangerous and sex was safe back in those days.

For road based cars, I want close racing.

That has its limits though. Some of last season's GT1 races looked more like crash testing than racing.
