CIAApr 12, 08:51 PMThey output to tape because they cannot grasp the concept that tape became obsolete a decade ago (and the ones who can grasp it are stuck dealing with others who demand delivery and archive on tape.)

I hate getting tape as delivery, but man I love it for archive. Tape sticks around while hard drives and burned data DVD's fail all the time.

What? Am I supposed to move over 6TB of archived video packages into the cloud? Hows that gonna work?

MultimediaSep 6, 08:54 AMBesides, no more Intel Core Solo in Mac Mini.
$599 - $579 Academic (3.5% off) Big Whoop.
1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor
2MB L2 Cache
667MHz Frontside Bus
512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
60GB Serial ATA hard drive
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0
Apple Remote

I think Merom will follow after their supply of Core 2 Duo can keep up with other model's needs first - my guess is by Thanksgiving. :) So that report of fulfillment of an order for a Core Solo with a Core Duo was not a screw up mistake on Apple's end. He was just the first to get one.

So looks like Steve will premiere the all new Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro next Tuesday.

*LTD*Apr 22, 10:03 PMI am more interested in knowing what good or purpose this is even been added for?

plus unencrypted is a major privacy concern ... just of the top of my mind, I can see where someone's house could be broken into by tracking the owners whereabouts.

As opposed to the much easier method of everyone in your neighbourhood noticing you're at work all day?

There are many people whose movements are best kept secret from certain others, with risk of life if revealed.

Battered women or kids in a secret shelter home, witness protection participants, undercover agents of all sorts, dissidents and rebels.

On a less serious note, there are probably some bosses who gave out iPhones, checking company iTunes hosts this weekned to see if their employees' travel receipts and sick days match their movements.

A HUGE stretch. There are other, easier ways of finding people. People in witness protection . . . carry items and live in areas that suit their situation. They are told what to do and not to do by the authorities. Personal phones are taken into account. Duh!

Undercover agents? LOL WTF is this, Russia House? I'm pretty sure they're "UNDERCOVER", meaning, tracking them would be useless, since there is nothing advertising their personal information. All anyone would get is random location data that could belong to anyone.

Dumbest examples ever. And you're a smart guy otherwise, so it's surprising.

dark knightApr 10, 06:09 PMas the other guys have said, in the UK automatics are pretty rare. i think we all know one friend or so who has an Auto only license, everyone else just gets a normal license.

if you are the sort of person who enjoys driving to any degree then a manual gearbox is much better. autos are just so boring, they never kick down when you need it or bizarrely hold on to a gear for much longer than you were expecting. im sure there are some good autos out there but they will always be more inefficient than a manual.

ShooksterSep 14, 09:24 AMDoes Consumer Reports stop recommending automobile purchases? Because you know if there is an issue with a car, the manufacturer will issue a recall. If you are affected, you have to take it into a dealer where it will be fixed. The onus is on the owner of the car, for crying out loud! The auto manufacturers should go house to house providing the fix for free to all cars, whether their owners report a problem or not!

Wait, you mean Consumer Reports does not hold the auto manufacturers to the same artificial standard they hold Apple to? How amazing...

I guess you don't read the news. Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles this year, even though not every owner of those vehicles was specifically experiencing the problem.

AerofluxMar 28, 09:22 PMHonestly? My launch day xbox is still going strong with nothing but 2 freeze ups. And my PS2 is still going strong too - i understand some peeps have had some significant problems (60% failure rate on launch 360s).

The crap I had to go through was insane. DHL never found my house. They shipped me 360s that went RRoD right out of the box. One 360 box mysteriously had a LOT of dirt in it. Another was scratched up. I had to fax them my receipt twice just to prove I bought the premium console (pro for customer service). My collection of reference numbers:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Aeroflux/Miscellaneous%20Stuff/refnumbers2.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Aeroflux/Miscellaneous%20Stuff/refnumbers1.png

Life cycle in relation to a platform isn't relative at all. As it stood prior to MS going for the 4 year lifecycle with the 360, it was a new platform every 5 years. With the advent of the playstation, there was significant overlap. This is what will happen again with the PS4 - hell, the PS2 has just recently been delisted by NPD - up until then they were still selling. That's the kind of overlap we are talking about - you still have the '10 year cycle' but a new platform will be released about half way through. T

Dude...got it before you said it the first time. By saying "life cycle is relative" I was referring to the whole paragraph I wrote before it, as in how long they last.

Methinks the fact that you don't blink that much would probably exacerbate your issues bud.

Yeah screen tear may be problematic for you, but some people don't even experience it - I do and I'll admit it's irritating, but it's hardly an issue where it will stop the majority. All I'm going to say it must suck to be you.

Try it on a big screen and get back to me...maybe it is just me. Who knows.

It sounds like you are a serious PC gaming fanboy and that's cool. There's plenty of room in the market. Granted, most of the PC devs are switching over as you make more money on the console side, but hey ho, you won't feel sick

Gaming fanboy. PCs just have the most flexibility. I don't distinguish between hardware when seeking a great gaming experience, but when the hardware isn't up to snuff I don't hold back my criticism.

You are thinking the console market is like the PC market - it isn't I agree, I'd love a new gen console right about now, but they are doing some interesting things with kinect and to a slightly lesser extent, the Wii so I'll at least be amused until the new gen arrives - but that's the thing, you can't release consoles like ipods - there has to be a decent amount of time to gather pace and sales.

Every five years is fine with me. I don't like every year for another iPod either, too damn expensive.

Ask tony hawk? don't make me laugh, that was activision's decision, Tony sold his likeness a long time ago. You are just showing how....little you know. And seriously? you bought one of those pieces of crap?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAnXD1rA32k

I'm sorry, but you are clearly clueless with some of your ideas. Which is fine with me, I at least am getting a laugh.

JGowanJan 13, 01:03 AMI think it's going to be a tablet that slaps the crap out of the Kindle. It'll be a full on computer tablet that does eBooks, too and is totally wireless like Kindle and can surf the internet like Kindle (free, like Kindle) but, again gives Kindle a sound beating in every single way known to man.

applefan289Mar 24, 01:41 PManyone want to guess what we will see in the new imac?

gpus i mean

I would guess there's going to be:

1.) A processor upgrade
2.) Same RAM
3.) Better graphics
4.) Thunderbolt

And to make it an epic upgrade, 5.) would be an all-new design.

mrgreen4242Aug 29, 03:43 PMI also think that making the mini bigger makes sense. I mean the Cube was a wonderful design and a few times larger than the mini.

Both of them have external power supplies, which from an esthetic point of view isn't the most pleasing. A larger design could potentially include an interal power supply, although it might make it a good deal nosier, I'm not sure.

We've all been crying for a new cube since the mini came out... is the mini an awesome machine? Absolutely, I love mine. But there is a market for a headless iMac/Cube/MacPro mini... people like me. I don't need a quad core computer. I don't need 16gb of RAM. I don't need 4 harddrive bays, or even two optical drive slots.

I do want a fast CPU, an upgradable GPU, a couple of full size HDDs and a full size optical drive. I also want something quiet, relatively affordable (something a bit less than an iMac would be idea), and stylish.

I don't think that Apple would lose Mac Pro sales to something like this - they might lose iMac sales but if the margins are the same for them who cares, and any loss of mini sales would be upsells, so it'd be a good thing.

I think a lot PC types, especially gamers, would be interested, bringing in new markets... None of my gamer friends would be satisfied by an iMac, but neither would they shell out $2-3k for a Mac Pro.

Let's see, the mini is 6.5x6.5x2 inches, would anyone even notice if it went to 8.5x8.5x4? Even better would be 8x8x8, just for the cube dimensions, done in iPod white (or black), would look stellar on a desktop. Core 2 Duo 1.83ghz, 4 RAM slots for an 8gb max with 512mb installed stock, 1 16x PCIe w/ 7300GT base (BTO options), 1 PCI slot, 2 3.5" drive bays w/ 160gb standard, 1 5.25" bay w/ SD, AE, BT2, 6 USB2 (4 back, 2 front), 1 FW 400, 1 eSATA (in place of FW800)... $999 anyone? BTO options for slower/fast CPUs and GPUs, more RAM, bigger HDD and a $200 TV tuner/video encoder breakout box... :D

Ping GuoApr 21, 12:08 PMIf anybody is interested, here is the iPhone Software License Agreement:
http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iphone.pdf

On the very first page, there is a rather large paragraph describing the use of non-personal location data.

By using any location-based services on your iPhone, you agree and consent to Apples and its partners and licensees transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of your location data and queries to provide and improve such products and services. You may withdraw this consent at any time by going to the Location Services setting on your iPhone and either turning off the global Location Services setting or turning off the individual location settings of each location-aware application on your iPhone.

Great, so all the users who have their location services setting switched off shouldn't have any hidden files, right?

kdarlingApr 22, 09:33 PMWhy is it necessary to keep your location a secret? What are Google and Apple going to do to you? What *exactly* and *specifically* is there to be afraid of?
Your location is *never* a secret, unless you're the President and it's a national crisis.

There are many people whose movements are best kept secret from certain others, with risk of life if revealed.

Small White CarAug 29, 09:06 AMWhy is everyone so hung up on Merom?

I never expected the mini to go that way this year. Remember, the entire point of the mini is to be LOW COST.

The switch to Intel caused the price of the mini to jump $100. I would much rather see its processor lag behind a little bit if they can get that price back to $499.

Same thing with the Macbook, I'd rather see a $999 Macbook with the current chips than a $1,099 Macbook that keeps up with the Macbook Pro's chips.

Of course, there's nothing saying Apple will lower the prices but IF they do then I would be very happy to see the "old" Intel chips stay in those machines another 6 months. The first core chips are still VERY fast chips, it's the rest of the system (video card) that's holding things up now. I wonder how much extra benefit you'd even get from a Merom chip in a mini.

Ridiculous lawsuit is ridiculous. This kind of stuff makes Apple look petty, just like the youtube videos of antenna problems they had.

Question...what was the last open world NFS game? I dont remember the name of it, it was like 5 or 6 years ago, and it was my favorite NFS game.
Most Wanted? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztEx_WhintE) That came out in and was a launch game on the 360. It was quite awesome. I had a lot of fun with that one.

imac_japanMar 19, 06:14 AMWOMBAT indeed!

Look, you don't have to call people names....

I just wanted to state that Apple should go on the Attack !! If it's a wombat then you should go and see Apple's situation outside of America.

In Australia (where Im from), the market is dead ! Most Apple Stores are large and if you ive in the Country - they don't exist. The rest of Asia is like that.

In Japan (where I live), alot of people have an Ipod but NOT a Macintosh...

Apple needs to push the market to get more...

MattsasaApr 2, 07:26 PMThat's funny. Your description lists every apple product you own except the iPad 2 :o

good point, he doesn't have an ipad he is just trolling.

people don't understand that if 1,000 ipads have a problem with backlight bleeding, thats still only .01% of ipad 2s Sold.

And apple will replace any ipad with backlight bleeding

JoshuarocksApr 19, 11:50 AMI can't wait! My G5 iMac has officially died and gone to that big computer desk in the sky. It served me well for 5 years, but it's over. Darn thang won't even turn on anymore. I hear the apple start up chime, but the screen stays black and then the iMac just shuts off. But even if I could fix it, it's so old it can't run the latest OSX or even play HD movies. Yup...it's time to buy a new iMac.

I'm hoping that the next update sees i7s across the line...even the 21.5" models. I expect thunderbolt too since the MacBook pros got it. Other things on my wish list would be for them to include that rumored flash start up drive as standard....but I'm not holding my breath. It would be great if the 21.5" model got the same ability as the 27" to be used as an external monitor. That way in 5 years or more when it becomes unable to run the latest software, you can still use it as a second monitor. :-)

I like the 27" features, it's just a tad too big. Actually the rumor about Apple adding a 24" size back to the iMac lineup would be PERFECT. But again...not gonna count on it.

How fast is your imac G5? On my G5 Quad I can play 720,1080, and yes using HTML5, 4096p! If I recall the G5 Imacs had only one processor in there? Right? You might want to check out the powerpc forums for assistance if you want to know whats wrong with your imac. I sense a broken capacitor.

bretmSep 7, 09:59 AMI've not bought a movie since 1995 on VHS. It's was just kind of silly having them litter up your shelves then and your hard disk now.

Bite the bullet like I did and toss all your jewel cases for CDs / DVDs. Now I just have a couple large binders on the shelf that contain all my software and CDs and DVDs. Nice and neat and takes up about 1/100th the space.
