ifjakeJul 18, 09:37 AMfor me, price must be less than 5 dollars, but not 5 dollars. i'd say even 2 dollars, since we're not going to own it, and owning a 40 minutes show from iTMS costs that much. This has to be competitive with stuff like netflix where the actual DVD is likely going to be much better quality than the low resolution crap they're likely to use with iTMS. ideally i would expect something like the 480p HD trailers they have at apple.com, but given the size of these files (let's see 1.5 minute trailer at 480p (848x400 it says) is 40MB, so say, a 120 minute movie at similar bitrates would be 3.2 GB) you're going to have to rent it the night before you want to watch it just so it'll download, even at fast broadband speeds. i'd say this isn't going to work. of course, i've always thought that movies apart from actual physical media will never be able to reach the quality we're all now expecting (soon 1080p tops) and even used to (DVDs), so i'm definitely biased towards this not working.

ten-oak-druidApr 26, 01:22 PMPet Store, the trademark, was not a word mark but a Typed Drawing mark. Hence it's the logo itself that was trademarked, not the phrase.

Try again.

Its a trademark. Give me a break. What do you think the "typed drawing" said?

Try again Knight.

Anyway, didn't Apple again use "We have the largest App Store" in their financials just last week, implying other "App Stores" weren't as large but that the term App Store is quite descriptive and generic ?

Too bad for them they keep diluting their own trademark. Anyway, until the USPTO is done with their opposition phase, it's not decided yet.

That is a very weak argument. Apple does not say they are the only app store. They have the largest app store. And their app store is named App Store™ and the name is trademarked.

I think you mean App Store™

Never forget cmd-alt-2 (or apple-option-2 if you're old-skool) ;)

Thanks!

Apple OCApr 23, 12:36 AMIts good that you are at least suspicious of apple's actions. There has to be a reason why apple inc still has not responded to this. BTW, before someone asks, no I do not have an android or other smart phone as they could be worse at spying than iphone.

my guess is ... it is some future AdSpam thing Apple wants to implement such as how FaceBook and Google use to make money.

They goofed by not encrypting it and will likely change that

mdriftmeyerApr 2, 10:47 PMSince so many of the units purchased in the last two weeks are destined for resale overseas (read the Asian scalper threads) have not even made it into the hands of the end-user, you have no idea how many will be returned.

No need to thank me for pointing out the obvious to you and your fellow apologists.

When Apple has their Quarterly press conference expect the iPad 2 to list 4+ million or more sales with back orders in the millions.

The return rate of all Apple products, across all of their hardware lines are lowest in the entire industry.

The iPhone 4 fiasco had a return rate half of that of the iPhone 3GS that everyone loved.

iPad return rate is at 2%: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20030211-37.html

Look to that being at or lower for the iPad 2.

DrFrankTMAug 25, 09:23 AMam I right in thinking that there is still no way to do extended desktop (two monitors displaying different stuff) on a Mini?

Hmmm... To cook an extended desktop on a Mini (sort of), you need:

1-) A Mac Mini
2-) An old Mac with a screen - mine is an old iBook G3
3-) A router
4-) Synergy
5-) Some kind of script - Automator does the job - to turn Synergy into a start-up item on both computers

Ok, it obviously doesn't give you two screens on your Mini, but you can cut and paste between screens, and use only one keyboard and mouse to control both, which is pretty sweet. Personally, I use my Mini for any kind of heavy workloads and the iBook for the small stuff. The lack of extended desktop was almost a show-stopper for me but, in the end, Synergy provides me with all the screen space I need. If you really need more than that though, maybe the Mini isn't the right machine.

EDIT: For example, I run Skype on my iBook. There is no difference whatsoever to me whether it is on my iBook or my Mini. You can use the secondary screen for a bunch of apps like those that do not really need to run on your Mini.

maclaptopApr 21, 12:29 PMOne of the many advantages of my iPhone 4 tracking me, is that I have big brother watching me. I'm never alone.

The only problem is my stupid Android phone can't do the same.

I have an appointment with Apple next week, I'm giving them the keys to my house, cars, and all my tax returns, stock certificates and investment portfolio. They promise to do every thing for less than 70% of my annual income. A great deal.

I'm in good hands with Apple, not a worry in the world. I'm now an official Apple fanboy. Living in the walled garden all I have to do is be an Apple drone :)

Woo Hoo life is sweet.

GatesbasherApr 2, 09:14 PMIt's interesting how the talking points all seem to converge on any given daytoday it's "light bleed". But of course, no one's orchestrating them so it's all a big coincidence. Right?

I think 90% of the issue is that this is the biggest LCD screen people have ever held this close to their face, and some are just now noticing that the LCD pixels can never be perfectly opaque.

This is a big reason why video purists prefer plasma or DLP TVsthey can deliver a much "blacker black". (But then, "video purist" is becoming just as much of an epithet as "audiophile" when someone is telling us that "nobody can possibly tell the difference" between CD-quality and 128 kps.) It's also why, in printing they have black ink as well as cyan, magenta, and yellowbecause they're translucent and can never add up to completely opaque black.

Obviously the fact that "black" isn't completely black bothers some people more than others, and the fact they noticed that fact for the first time on an Apple product makes it Apple's fault. It bothers me moderately, but I realize it's just a feature of backlit LCDs and get on with my life.

I'm not one of those people screaming for OLED screens, because I know they won't save any power and I'm unconvinced of their longevity, especially in the humid environment I live in, but they would eliminate that one problem.

czardmitriNov 28, 02:16 PMone of the key differences between the xbox and zune. is that microsoft only had to contend with 2 other players in the video game indistry. the ipod maybe top. but there are hundred of other companies to battle first just to reach second place. and also phone companies. spending money maynot help them like in the case of the xbox.

The main difference (as I understand it) is that MS can at least attempt to make up for their losses on the sales of xBoxes from the games that are licensed for xBox. They can't do the same with music for the money they're losing on each Zune sold. Apple's margin on music is slim; they make money on the iPods.

whoooaaahhhhSep 6, 07:51 PMDoes anyone else think that Apple really really needs a rental model for the movie store? I'm against it with music but it's not the same a movies. I don't want my harddrive full of these things. I would be nice to rent one for much less, watch it and delete it. I don't see it being very successful if it is for purchase only.

This always seemed like a no-brainer to me. I have been BEGGING for a subscription model.

How many times do you listen to a CD again? A million
How many times do you watch a movie again? Maybe 10 times at most (for most customers) Maybe less

If you have high speed internet (which is getting faster and faster everyday) then you can afford to just setup a queue like Netflix and you'll get to see probably 100 movies a month if you feel like downloading that often.

Look at the success of Netflix, the company has practically exploded! People stopped going to traditional rental houses so they had to adopt a Netflix type of service. It really couldn't be more obvious.

Besides, no matter how good the quality gets, do you really have the storage space for your ENTIRE MOVIE COLLECTION? Even if I filled my new Mac Pro with 3TB of storage, there is NO WAY I COULD EVER FIT MY MOVIE COLLECTION AT DVD QUALITY!

yac_modaJul 21, 06:16 PMIMO the President has very little direct effect. Since the President barely affects the economy, there really isn't much he can do to the stock market. Anything he might do in the form of stimulus packages... tax cuts, credits, etc. take years to work it's way into the economy. That said, there can definitely be a long term effect from a president's actions.

Your summation is a leap of faith, check your market history what I said has STRONG historical backing yours does NOT.

The USA President has a HUGE effect day to day ON THE WORLD scene and that effects the value of the dollar and thus everything else especially foreign investment which is THE BIGGEST money flow.

And Jimmy Carter is the BEST EXAMPLE of a disaster of foreign confidence.

However, the Fed does not care about the stock market per se.

I YOU believe THIS then you believe everything else he says and you are not paying any attention to WHAT HE DOES

The Fed is interested in controlling inflation and the economy, avoiding overheating and softening downturns. Essentially, the Fed tries to "tune" the economy.

Duuu !!

The President can not restrict money supply. What you've seen over the past 25 years was basically 3 administrations (Reagan/Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr.) that essentially transitioned during downturns in the business cycle. Coincidence.

Without any doubt the President can and does, by WHO he appoints to the position of Fed Chairman.

Presidents that have a clue also have HUGE control over the money supply by how they fine tune and enforce immigration law, the demographics of entrepreneurialism is hugely effected in a relatively short time by emigration from europe since the average age of those emigrants is around 35.

The Feds money supply adjustments are diluted by this immigration which has a BIG effect on economic growth and the job market, although I don't expect you to understand this.

And I have no idea what "hyper ww competition from the internet" means.

 I AM NOT SURPRISED !!!

You just like to argue !

MultimediaSep 1, 03:51 PMThis basically confirms that Apple will release the "Mac".

A mini/mid tower with a Conroe, upgradeable video card maybe 1 or 2 open PCI slots, 2 HDD slots, 1 DVD slot and 4 ram slots.

It all seems pretty obvious. What "This" is This? You need to include a link with your references please? We can't read your mind. :confused:http://static.flickr.com/95/231249512_9eccfef387_o.jpg

Oh yeah. Hope they remember the Dual-Link DVI. This is 30" BTW. Could sell for $2999 with a 2.66 GHz Conroe inside. Brilliant idea to perforate the sides like the Pro case thus letting in and out a LOT of air all the time. *

So I guess getting back to reality, the 2GHz Mac Pro is the new "weakling" that will be the only decently powered headless Mac. That is really sad. $2124 stripped to the bone.

We need benchmarks between 2GHz Mac Pro and iMacs and Dual Core PowerMac G5's to see what that really means.

* Anyone know the source of this image/design? I think it's fantastic.

ZebraineZJun 22, 03:37 PMI wouldn't mind an iOS-type OS on an iMac as long as it had some more features of a full-fledged desktop OS. As in:

-Multiple Users
-Printing
-Some kind of file system
-More apps of a creative side (ie movie editing, word processing, programming, etc.) instead of just media consuming apps

Note: this list is not exhaustive; there are many more features I'd like that I just can't think of at the moment.

Plus, some games/apps will need to be done, specifically those that need the accelerometers. I don't think people would want to swing around a 20/30 pound computer. But that would be a good way to make more money; people keep breaking them so they'll have to pay for repairs/new ones.

I doubt 10.7 will be such an overhaul. Probably more like Mac OS X 11.0 or a totally new naming scheme.

You just described a touchless OS X. It does exactly that...
